Charles Mathies is currently a visiting researcher (2022-2025) at the Finnish Institute for Educational Research (KTL) and an assistant professor (tenure track) in the department of Educational Foundations and Leadership at Old Dominion university (USA). He is also a docent with the Higher Education Group (HEG) at Tampere University (Finland).
Dr. Mathies' research focuses on the role of global markets, politics, and structures in the movement of knowledge, data, and people. He recently completed an Academy of Finland Research Fellowship (based at KTL, 2017-2022) focused on international student migration and mobility in Finland and Europe. Dr. Mathies was an Associate Editor for the Journal of International Students (JIS) for four years from 2020-2023 and sat on the editorial boards for Tertiary Education and Management journal (TEAM) from 2015-2023 and New Directions for Institutional Research (NDIR) from 2018-2021.  For 2021-2025 he represents (1 of 2) Finland on the Management Committee for the EU COST ACTION "European Network on International Student Mobility: Connecting Research and Practice". For 2020-2021 he was Finland's representative in the Expert Group of OECD's  project "Reducing the precarity of researchers' careers".  He previously has held multiple university management positions in Europe and the United States primarily focused on strategic planning, data analytics, and institutional research. Dr. Mathies has published, taught, consulted and facilitated workshops globally on topics ranging from international student migration and mobility to higher education finance and policy, strategic and institutional planning and data analytics.
