Research on higher education

The Finnish Institute for Educational Research has carried out research on higher education since the 1970s, within the framework of two different research traditions. On the one hand, we have placed strong emphasis on higher education policies, using perspectives based in the social sciences. On the other hand, higher education pedagogy and behavioural sciences have played a strong part in our resesarch agenda. In addition, there are also projects that combine these approaches.

In practice, higher education is studied in two main research areas of the FIER: in Education and societal change and in The processes of learning, teaching and guidance.
