Danish network conference: MENTORSHIP FOR NEW TEACHERS, -how to do it in the best way?

The main aim of this conference is to promote the professional learning of newly qualified teachers during their induction phase.
One of the most promising methods to promote new teachers’ professional learning is mentoring in its various forms.
The conference focuses on sharing research-based evidence and best practices of mentoring in Denmark as well as in other Nordic countries through a series of seminars and workshops for mentors, school staff, municipality staff, teacher union representatives, researchers and teacher educators.

1. The techniques, possibilities and pitfalls of mentoring with experienced mentors as negotiators through an exchange of experiences. Lilian Rohde, lektor, UCC University College, Denmark (Language: Danish)
2. "Early career support: What urgent situations may occur, how to deal with them, and how to support professional development through mentoring" Workshop activities on the basis of fragments of the Dutch film ”Miss, What keeps you going?” dealing with the development of a young teacher in the first years of her career. We will identify her challenges in becoming a “professional” teacher and discuss how to organize mentoring and induction at school level to support young teachers in an optimal way. The international model of guidance and induction developed in the COMENIUS-project IGNATIUS (Induction & Guidance of Newly Appointed Teachers) will be introduced to structure the results of this discussion. 1. Is supervision in school practice (for student teachers) and mentoring for NQT´s two sides of the same coin? Is it possible to bridge the gap between students’ practice teaching and the induction period of NQTs through supervisors becoming mentors for their new colleagues? 2. What do we understand by good mentorship and good organisational frames?
Six kinds of Nordic input followed by round table discussions
The Norwegian example: Development projects leading to ”veiledning” for all. Paul Robert Sundar, Høgskolen i Oslo.
The Swedish Example: Mentorship as a right, as an obligation or as an offer? Lee Gleichmann Linnarsson, Lärarförbundet and Anna Jändel-Holst, Lärarnas Riksförbund.

In this Danish conference the Danish participants will be joined by members of the NORDPLUS-project ”Supporting Newly Qualified Teachers through Collaborative Mentoring ”(NQT-COME) , and the COMENIUS-project ”Induction & Guidance of Newly Appointed Teachers in European Schools” (IGNATIUS) as participants and instructors.
 

Target group:

In general everybody engaged in supporting NQT´s during their induction period - especially all mentors. By ”mentors” we understand everybody involved in supporting NQT´s through direct support from experienced colleagues to NQT(s) (in different organizational ways whether these are called mentoring, coaching, supervision, buddy-arrangements, group supervision or the like).
