Working life knowledge in vocational counselling

Ann-Christine Ringström & Kai Koivumäki

Careers guidance professionals have different qualifications and competences in different countries. However, something that the professionals do have in common every where, is the need for working life knowledge. Knowledge about working life is an imperative skill for the counsellor in his/her effort to make the client aware of what factors will make him successful when he enters the labour market. Through the understanding of the counsellor about society and the labour market, the client can from an individual perspective establish a basis on which he/she can construct a vision for the future. A Nordic network of guidance counsellors from Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland decided to take a look at the concept and made a minor study on working life knowledge. Participants in the network compared the counsellor training and interviewed practising counsellors in the Nordic countries. In this workshop we are going to present the results of the study and discuss the subject together. How can you define working life knowledge? How can it be integrated in the counselling process? How could it be better represented in the basic and further training for counsellors?
