The Integration of Foreign Academics into the University of Helsinki as a Strategic Historical Shift in the Development of the University

The present PhD thesis is a part of a larger study titled ‘Opening up pathways to competence and employment for immigrants’ (OPCE) that consists of three individual studies. All three projects investigate immigrants’ pathways to education and work and analyse the process of recognition from individual and collective points of view. The overall aim is to facilitate recognition of immigrants’ competences and the creation of new pathways to employment in Finnish educational and work practices. One of the three projects (lead by Annalisa Sannino) specifically focuses on foreign professionals’ access to Finnish labour market. This study aims at uncovering obstacles experienced by highly educated immigrant professionals in their attempts to be integrated into the Finnish working life. My PhD thesis will be a part of this project and primary objectives of the thesis are 1) to explore the process of integration of foreign academics into the working life of Finnish universities and 2) to identify possible pitfalls, conflicts and contradictions in this process. Change laboratory interventions will be conducted to explore possibilities of opening up pathways of integration at the University of Helsinki.
