2. Leading the research programme on Research on Internationalisation and Development in Education and Training (http://ktl.jyu.fi/ktl/english/research/ridet) (2003-2006). The research programme has had four foci: (1) empirical analyses of forms of internationalisation typical of educational and work organisations; (2) promotion of European knowledge formation based on trans-national cooperation in vocational education and training (VET); (3) promotion of trans-cultural knowledge development in more wide-ranging contexts of international cooperation and development; and (4) analyses of international educational development in the light of the goals of the UNESCO programme Education for All. The objective of the research programme has been to analyse (a) developing multicultural competence in teacher education; (b) teachers’ own perceptions of their cultural competence and learning; (c) the acquisition of multicultural competence on the job, and (d) instruction of Finnish as a second language and competence-based training for immigrants. The impact of the results of the research programme has been shown on the following areas: examining and re-defining intercultural/ multicultural learning, educational development and related concepts; optimising researching, teaching and learning processes; strengthening organisational and institutional capacity in diversity promotion; and aligning policy and systemic improvements. The research projects examined multiculturalisation in education and training at the level of the implementation of educational policy and of the curriculum. 3. Leader and principal investigator of the research programme in Learning at Work (www.jyu.fi/ktl/research/akto/) (1999-2002). Workplace learning was a new practice to be developed in vocational upper secondary and higher education at the turning point of the century in Finland. Research on learning at / through / to work was based on the assumption that students learn in teams and communities of experienced professionals, which has enabled them to use and apply their knowledge and skills in authentic situations and environments. The theoretical frameworks of the research team's studies conceptualised the pedagogy of workplace learning and work, the culture of project work, workplace supervision, processes through which diverse people have become employable and avoided marginalisation. The methodological choices of the research team were influenced by approaches to the problems involved in workplace learning from the learners' perspective on the one hand and from the systems-level perspective of investment on the other. The research programme has analysed (1) what enterprises were like as learning environments as assessed by students, teachers, workplace trainers and employers; (2) what factors in workplace learning have fostered employability and promote employment prospects; (3) how workplace trainers supervised students; (4) how far the different parties involved saw workplace learning as an investment; and (5) how student perceived diversity and the culture of schools and workplaces. The research team consisted of eight persons of whom some were funded as follows:
*Funding (EUR 17.000) from the Finnish National Board of Education. Managing, co-ordinating and researching Leonardo-projektin kansallinen levitys [National dissemination of the results of the European Leonardo da Vinci project] 1999.
