Postdoctoral research project (Academy of Finland, 2008-2010)

Educational design for learning communties dwelling with technologies: Sensitive reading of collective activity.

This postdoctoral research project aimed to capture the richness and complexity how collective learning units developed in technology-rich higher education organizations and to add to the body of knowledge to design for/coach successful learning units to evolve and develop. The development process did not show a linear improvement as posited by earlier theories but was episodic and particular. Thus, achieving the maturity of work, smooth passage is not even assumed. Also, in evolving peer-led collectives group and organizing processes became intertwined and the underlying meaning making, not the formal positions, constructed “the authority”. Collectives students described reflected the contemporary, dynamic concept of community with memberships and social identities of many shifting (sub)collectives. Thus, to prepare students for working life is to coach them in achieving, demonstrating and managing competencies in collective sense where wide collaboration, teamwork and co-leadership are highly valued today.
