Osaava Verme. Peer group mentoring: Support for new teachers: Osaava Verme is a collaborative network between the Finnish teacher education institutions, including the vocational teacher education institutions and teacher education departments of universities. The main aim is to promote a life long continuum of teachers' professional development through building bridges between the pre-service and in-service teacher education.The project is funded by the Osaava programme of Ministry of Education and Culture

University students’ guidance at the beginning of the studies – support given by teachers is focused on the guidance of university students at the beginning of their studies in two English language units. The data were gathered by both quantitative and qualitative methods including two-year follow-up and interviews. Additionally, the teacher tutors of the other unit were interviewed.

Development of thinking in adulthood (book project) Editing a book focusing on development of thinking abilities in adulthood. The authors invited as writers are from various universities in Finland and are mainly experts on their specific domains. Contract of publication has been done with Gaudeamus Helsinki University Press. Book to be published 2012.

Citizenship education in schooling surveys and examines citizenship education in schooling, especially in teacher education. Here, the increasing societal diversity is considered an important viewpoint. The researcher is working in domestic and international cooperation within CICE (Erasmus Academic Network on Children’s Identity and Citizenship in Europe).

Integration in educational policy and schooling
Due to rapidly increasing migration Finnish schools are becoming more and more multicultural. The study is mapping Finnish educational policy and schooling contexts along the dimensions of interculturality, social integration and equal opportunities. The study is based on international cooperation with the Migration Policy Group of British Council and CiCe (Erasmus Academic Network on Children’s Identity and Citizenship in Europe).

Intercultural processes within pedagogy in higher education examines intercultural processes in internationalising higher education from a cultural and pedagogical perspective. The research materials include e.g. group discussions and interviews of university teachers concerning their experiences from teaching visits abroad and reports of university students from their study and practice period abroad. A cooperative project for improving teaching in a university subject has been done.

'Flexible Basic Education in diffeent learning environments’ A national dropout activation programme (2009-2011) is a part of a national dropout activation programme (2006-2011). The aim of this study is to survey various educational practices in JOPO-schools. The data is gathered by both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research is funded by the National Board of Education and the results will be published as a guidebook for schools.

Learning network developing working life projects of higher education
The purpose of this research and development project is to develop interactive tools for project cooperation in learning network of higher education, working life and university researchers. Examples of joint tools are the models of engagement mentoring of lower secondary school pupils and a research and evaluation method for working life projects.

Development of Guidance and Working Life Skills in Higher Education (OHTY) research and development project funded by European Social Fund aims at supporting students’ study paths and transition from higher education to the world of work. The project is divided into several sub-projects, two of which are carried out at the Finnish Institute for Educational Research: 1) Development of Generic Skills in Higher Education, and 2) Social Media in Guidance – Guidance in Social Media

Purpose of the study is to examine the relationships between university students’ approaches to learning, perceptions of their learning environments, experiences of guidance, and self-perceived learning outcomes such as development of generic skills and scientific thinking.

AHELO-FS (Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes - Feasibility Study) is OECD initiated project to assess learning outcomes on an international scale by creating measures that would be valid across cultures and languages. Finland participates in the generic skills strand.

Students’ learning at work in Finnish VET: The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to examine vocational students’ learning at work as an acquisition of skills and knowledge at work (i.e. students’ skill-related learning outcomes at work), and students’ vocational development at work in terms of vocational identity development. The data on the final-year vocational students were collected with Internet questionnaire and interviews. The data were analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods.
