The roles of the first and second language to achieve bilingualsim in Finnish elementary schools
(The language skills of school children with an immigrant background)

The project focuses on sixth-graders with an immigrant background and their linguistic development. While the main focus is on the development of formal skills in the Finnish language, attention is also paid to language use more generally. The project reports discuss, among other things, language tests as an indicator of language proficiency, the effect of the mother tongue or first language on language proficiency, and the use of language in building and reinforcing one’s identity.

Change in Networks, Higher Education and Knowledge Societies (CINHEKS)

This international comparative research project will analyse how higher education institutions (HEIs) are networked within distinct knowledge societies within - and across - Europe, the USA and Japan. The study will illuminate the nature of linkages between academics, HEIs and crucial actors within the dynamics of knowledge production in these regions. The objectives of CINHEKS are based on the juxtaposition of historically distinct societies, global policy debates and conceptually defined empirical data, chosen to reveal their key similarities or differences.

The project aims at (a) comparing the policies of work-based immigration in selected European countries, (b) designing a training course for the experts of immigration work, and (c) analysing their intercultural competencies.

Intercultural Competences Training for Trainers and Advisors in the Field of Professional Orientation (INT.COMP)

The INT.COMP project aims at enhancing the reintegration of unemployed immigrants into the labour market through improving trainers’ and advisors’ intercultural competence. Within the INT.COMP project an additional qualification for intercultural competence is being developed to enrich continuous training possibilities and enhance consultancy services in the field of active labour market measures, in particular in professional orientation for unemployed immigrants.

Opening up Pathways to Competence and Employment for immigrants (OPCE)

The direct or indirect discrimination prevent immigrants’ access to education and jobs. Immigrants’ foreign-acquired education and work experience tend to be discounted compared to those of nationally and locally trained. The purpose of the three related but individual projects is to study to what extent immigrants’ prior learning and experience is recognised to contribute access to jobs and career prospects, and to develop related methodologies of recognition and intervention in education research. The target groups of the research are the 1st generation immigrants (less and highly educated adults) and the 2nd generation young people whose parents are/were immigrants. Funding by Academy of Finland 2009 – 2012.

Paths to the University of the Third Age

My doctoral thesis research examines the activities of Finnish Universities of the Third Age from the perspective of their students. In terms of methodology, I am interested in autobiographical aspects, e.g. how the meaning of learning is being constructed in relation to prior learning experiences. The data consists of life stories written by third age students under the heading ”Studying at the University of the Third Age and my previous learning paths” (N=134).

Research and development project for university quality assurance systems

The project, which is funded by the Ministry of Education, explored the introduction of quality assurance systems in Finnish universities. The project was completed for Finland in 2007, but a comparative set of data has been collected in Greece and its analysis is still in progress.

Universities’ structural development, academic communities and change (RAKE project)

The project, which is funded by the Ministry of Education, investigates how structural development has changed the staff’s, both teaching and administrative, as well as students’ views and possibilities to act in the reform process of higher education institutions. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Research Unit of Science, Technology and Innovation at the University of Tampere (TaSTI) and Higher Education Group (HEG).

Matti Vesa Volanen

My current research work has to do with outlining the basic character and idea of polytechnics with respect to universities and the world of work, and also with the changes in universities’ tasks. More broadly, it concerns the role and nature of skills and knowledge in social development. Another development target encompasses regional development of secondary education as well as cooperation between upper secondary schools and vocational institutes. I am also involved in a project funded by the Academy of Finland (Resources, locality and life course), which explores the transformations of social, economic, and cultural capital in the course of life as a local phenomenon.
