ICCS (International Civic and Citizenship Education Study) in a nutshell

What is ICCS?

ICCS (International Civic and Citizenship Education Study) investigates the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries in the 21st century.
The purpose of ICCS is to investigate student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as student attitudes, perceptions and activities related to civics and citizenship.
ICCS examines differences among countries in these outcomes and how those differences relate to characteristics of countries as well as variations within countries.
The study builds on the previous IEA studies of civic education, particularly CIVED in 1999.
ICCS is organized by IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) and the International Study Centre is located at ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) .

Data collection

8 Grade students who completed a text booklet and a questionnaire related to their participation in society and attitudes related to civics and citizenship
The teacher questionnaire collected data on teachers' perceptions of civic and citizenship education in their schools as well their teaching assignment and background.
Through a school questionnaire, principals provided information about school characteristics and the provision of civic and citizenship education in the school.
Data was collected during spring 2009.

ICCS in Finland

The ICCS Study in Finland is carried out by the Finnish Institute for Educational Research at the University of Jyväskylä in collaboration with Ministry of Education and Culture.
