Sixth ELGPN plenary meeting, 3-4 May 2010, Zaragoza, Spain
The Sixth Plenary Meeting of the European Lifelong Guidance Policy Network on 3-4 May 2010, took place in Zaragoza, Spain. The meeting was organised jointly by ELGPN and the Spanish Ministry of Education and the European Commission in conjunction of the Spanish 2010 EU Presidency conference "Valuing VET competences".
After the Spanish EU Presidency conference on VET the European Commission presented 9 June 2010 its new vision for the future of vocational education and training. The role of lifelong guidance is included. According to this communication lifelong learning opportunities in both initial and continuing VET must be coupled with guidance and counselling services to facilitate transitions from training to employment and between jobs. Guidance from public employment services must work in a close cooperation with guidance provided by Education and Training systems. Both young and adults have to be empowered to master transitions through the development of career management skills. Guidance should be redirected from testing to tasting approach, providing young people with an opportunity to get acquainted with different vocational trades and career possibilities. Specific attention should be paid to the issue of gender equality to encourage young people to consider occupations beyond traditional gender profiles.
